Brick and Mortar Chimney Repair

Most chimneys are built out of brick and mortar. These materials are porous by nature and will break down over time. The mortar that holds the bricks together will start to crack and gap. This can be caused by moisture, corrosive gases or extreme temperatures — or all of the above. As these cracks and gaps develop, the damage will start to accelerate. At the very least, your chimney will not function efficiently and may be dangerous to use. These cracks and gaps can allow hot gases to escape from your chimney liner and into the walls of your home, possibly causing a fire. Every chimney is different, especially when it comes to older homes. It wasn’t until the middle part of the 20th century that chimney liners became part of building code requirements, so some older homes have chimneys without liners. Even if your chimney was built with a liner, if you’re in an older home, you should definitely have your chimney inspected with a video scan to check the condition or the liner.

About Mortar

Mortar is a porous substance which will enable water to seep into the cracks. When this water freezes in the winter, it will expand and crack the crown, ultimately letting water into your chimney.
